My small UK locos

Postby sidneylopsides » Tue May 19, 2020 10:23 am

Since discovering this system, I've been working on my own UK engines, they're all still under varying levels of completionn so not ready to share quite yet. I've tried to work in a standard set of components, so they all use a Wemos D1 mini, DRV8833 and a generic yellow gearbox motor that I got 10 for £10 on Amazon. There are also 7x3x3mm bearings and 3mm bolts used in some places. The coupling hooks are the same across all models so they aren't copied on all of them. I tried to make the axles as printable as possible. This was a fun challenge on the 08!
Chassis are all single pieces with suspension and axle boxes etc, printed top down.

Sentinel Y1
This is an odd little shunter, the real one has two vertical steam engines in the middle with a gearbox and chain drive to each axle. This actually made it the easiest to copy, as I could mount the motor in the middle and use rubber bands for drive belts. The wheels and pulleys push onto the axle bars and keep pretty square on, there are bearings in the wheels and 3x10mm bolts screw into the axle boxes from the outside for the bearings to run on. Motor is just friction fitted, the belts on each side keep it pulled down too. This one is running as a bare chassis right now, I only finished modelling the bodywork last night.

LNER Y7/ NER Class H
Another small steam engine. This and the Y1 are preserved at a nearby railway, which is one of the reasons I picked them.
This is the least developed model so far. For this one finding a way to fit the motor was a challenge and I'm trying a worm gear for drive. I may be able to fit a single 18650 cell into the boiler for power.

BR Class 08

This is the biggest and most complex, it's at the stage of a running chassis (in purple though as I ran out of black) with most of the bodywork apart from the cab printed. I had to a do a few test prints of the mechanical parts to get things running smoothly.
There are plastic beam axles, the wheels push on with keying for the quartering positions, then the axle box with bearings push on, then finally the cranks, again with keying for quartering. The wheelsets then push fit into the chassis from underneath, friction holds them in place well. The rear wheels are pushed directly onto the motor axles with stub axles for the cranks.
The con rods have oversized holes so the 2.5mm screws let them move freely.
I went a bit overboard and added sprung buffers to this one too! Thre's still under fram details and ladders to do before I print a final chassis.

10ft wagon
Needed some appropriate rolling stock so made a 10ft chassis, it prints in one piece, aart from the buffers that you push in. The wheels again are on box type printed axles, with a pinpoint bearing. Simple, and they run really smoothly. So far I've done a 7 plank wagon top, but I'll do a box van, hopper and tanker too.
